Cartagena

Cartagena's Incredible Submarine

Built in Cartagena by Isaac Peral and first launched in 1888, Spain claims to have invented the first modern submarine which is now on display near the Town Hall.

Military ships are still built in Cartagana by the Bazan shipyard for both the Spanish and foreign navies, and they specialise in submarines.

Cartagena is still the Spanish Navy's most important base in the Mediterranean and many military installations can be seen.

Cartagena has excellent shopping facilities and resturants. From Mazarron the city is only about a half hour's drive, and there is also a regular bus service.

Parque de Torres

To relax from the busy city try a visit to the Parque de Torres, which is only a few minutes walk from the centre. Here you will find peace and tranquility and stupendous views of the city, harbour and surrounding countryside. There is a good quality bar & resturant, play area for the children and various animals such as ducks and peacocks.

La Bateria de San Patricio

This ancient gun battery used be part od the port's defences in the 16th and 17th Centuries and has now been transformed into one of the Park's viewpoints.

The Municipal Auditorium

This can be found immediately next to the Park's main entrance and is the venue for many prestigious musical and cultural events. Every summer there is the Mar de Musicas when musicians from all over the world travel to Cartagena to perform here.

Castillio de la Concepción

The Park surrounds this old castle which was restored in 1994 and dates back to the 14th century.

The Old Bullring

This lies to the East of the Park and is no longer used, and is being restored for civic use (but not for bullfighting).
