Outings in Mazarron - Route No.6 |
|
DIFFICULTY:- AN ALMOST FLAT PATH WHICH CAN BE EXPLORED ON FOOT OR BY BICYCLE. TAKE CARE DURING THE SUMMER AS THE ROAD IS USED BY NUMEROUS CARS ON THEIR WAY TO THE BEACHES. |

1. The track passes along one of the better preserved sections of the coast. Start at the Playa del Rincon in Bolnuevo.
2. The path rapidly descends to almost sea level as the last of the houses are left behind. Impressive cliffs and the foothills of Sierra Moreras are to the right of the route.
3. Sedimentary rocks show that this area was below sea level in previous times. Some olive trees, palms and esparto grass relieve the otherwise arid landscape.
4. The island Isla de Cueva Lobos is a refuge for marine birds, and is a protected area.
5. Ruined houses, irrigation canals and small reservoirs can be seen as the path goes inland. Many human settlements have now disappeared from the area, but fig, pomegranate and almond trees remain.
6. Large quantities of marine fossils and an abandoned quarry can be found at Playa la Grua.
7. The route finishes at Casas del Calaleņo where remains
of a Roman foundry can be seen. You can choose to return to Bolnuevo
or follow the path further down the coast to Caņada de Gallego.
Alternatively, follow the reverse of Route No.5 back to Mazarron.
