Outings in Mazarron - Route No.2 |
|
DIFFICULTY:-
NARROW ROADS BUT GENERALLY WITH A FIRM SURFACE |

1. This route is best explored by car or bicycle. Start at Mazarron and take the MU-Y-6039 road towards La Atalaya.
2. As you leave Mazarron you will pass through a mysterious landscape of mineheads, wells and abandoned mining construction - evidence of Mazarron's industrial past.
3. Here the landscape opens out to an agricultural area of olives, almond trees and cereals. To the left are the mountains of Las Moreras and on it's slopes Coto Fortuna, the old mining area which has been important since Roman times.
4. At La Atalaya take the road to La Majada. After crossing a dry ravine the view changes to citrus orchards.
5. The road rounds the foothills of Sierra Almenara at Pico de Agula and continues towards the village of Gañuelas. On the way are examples of popular architecture, and you will also see how modern technology has impacted agricultural techniques with large areas cultivated under plastic.
6. After crossing the rambla of Barranco del Reventon take the C-3315 back towards Mazarron. Here the landscape is dominated by the yellow ochre coloured sedimentary rocks of the dry ravine and the surrounding vineyards and melon fields. Some amphibious reptiles and a lot of bird life may be found here .
7. The road bridges the Rambla del Canal before heading towards Murcia on the MU-603. Here the route passes through a sedimentary basin, covered with little vegetation and erosion has formed many holes and ravines.
8. Pass the village of Saladillo, the new residential complex at Camposol and then take the right turning to La Pinilla. In the distance you will see the mountains of Carrascoy and La Espuña.
9. On arriving at the pretty village of La Pinilla turn right to take a country road back to Mazarron. This passes through the Sierra del Algorobo and you can see many different types of vegetation and wildlife including eagles, peregrine falcons and the royal owl.
10. Here you can explore an old track leading to abandoned gypsum and marble excavations. The remains of the old gypsum ovens can still be seen.
11. Finally the route passes the abandoned village of Garrobo on the outskirts of Mazarron and there are more mining remains to be seen on approaching the town.
