The material in the first part of this section has been prepared from information supplied by the Mazarron Tourist Office, who have all these routes in leaflet form in a nicely produced folder. There are 15 routes in the series and you can obtain your personal copy from the Tourist Office located in the center of Puerto de Mazarron.
Before setting out be sure to read the advice in the leaflets or on this page. If you would like to contribute your favourite outing in Mazarron please send us an e-mail.
Reader's contributions form the second part of this section are at the bottom of the page after the table of contents. These routes are not placed on the map below.

Irregular landscape and scarce rainfall - less than 250mm per year, average temperatures of 17 -18°C, little vegetation .... these are the features which taken individually cannot explain the attraction a traveller feels when first seeing this area. Sensations which may be described as contradictory because Mazarron offers a complex variety of landscape, from the sea, mountains and fields, it's mining past and agricultural & tourist present; a contrasting image of harshness and fertility, between the natural and man-made.
If possible take some water with you as it is not readily available on many of these routes. Given the characteristics of the terrain the best time to explore is Spring, Autumn and Winter. During the summer avoid midday excursions. Wear cotton clothes and stout comfortable shoes and in Summer wear a hat or cap.
Take your camera, binoculars and a map. The best maps to use are published by MOPT (Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes) - buy number 976 at scale 1:25.000. This is covers the Mazarron area and there are four maps in the 976 series. For route No.3 you will also need the "La Pinillia" sheet of map No.954 (Totana). They can be obtained at good bookshops and are quite inexpensive (less than 500 Pts). Look for the distinctive blue cover.
We apologise for the quality of the maps on subsequent pages, which do not reproduce well on the WWW. Please treat them as a guide - the "real thing" either from the leaflets or a map is much more legible.
